U.S. Air Force Airman Shot and Killed by Sheriff's Deputy in Florida Incident

Fatal Shooting
According to the U.S. Air Force statement released on Monday, Senior Airman Fortson was shot and killed at his off-base residence located at Chez Elan Apartments, approximately five miles from the air base. The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office reported that a deputy, responding to a disturbance in progress, encountered a 23-year-old man armed with a gun, and reacted in self-defense.
Tragic Loss
Despite being rushed to the hospital, Senior Airman Fortson succumbed to his injuries. Fortson, who began his active duty service on November 19, 2019, was assigned to the 4th Special Operations Squadron, which is part of the 1st Special Operations Wing based at Hurlburt Field. The 1st Special Operations Wing, known for its AC-130 gunship, has expressed its commitment to providing casualty affairs service to the family and supporting the squadron during this tragic time.

Following the incident, the deputy involved has been placed on paid administrative leave while a formal investigation is underway.
