U.S. Army Soldier Detained by Russian Authorities in Vladivostok
Russian authorities detained a U.S. soldier in Vladivostok, complicating U.S.-Russia relations. The soldier, Staff Sgt. Gordon Black, was apprehended on criminal charges.
On May 2, in the port city of Vladivostok, a U.S. Army soldier, Staff Sgt. Gordon Black, 34, was detained by Russian authorities on charges of criminal misconduct. The soldier was in the process of returning home to Fort Cavazos in Texas after being stationed in South Korea when the incident occurred.
Russia notified the State Department of the soldier’s detention in accordance with international agreements between the two nations. The U.S. Department of State is providing appropriate consular support to the soldier in Russia, as confirmed by Cynthia O. Smith, an Army spokeswoman.
A State Department official has reiterated the U.S. government’s warning for Americans not to travel to Russia, following this incident. It is likely to be another complication in the contentious relationship between Moscow and Washington.
