Search for Missing U.S. Marine in Puerto Rico

The U.S. Coast Guard has launched a search operation for a 26-year-old U.S. Marine, Samuel Wanjiru, from Massachusetts, who went missing after swimming in high surf off Puerto Rico's northeast coast. The young Marine was on vacation with his family when he disappeared on Wednesday afternoon while at La Pared beach in Luquillo.

Search Efforts

Authorities have intensified the search efforts, with divers jumping from a helicopter to scour the area of interest. The Puerto Rico Bureau of Emergency Management and Disaster Administration, alongside the U.S. Coast Guard, is conducting a thorough search, utilizing jet skis and volunteers in the operation.

Tragic Incidents

Tragically, another American tourist lost his life in northwest Puerto Rico while attempting to rescue his teenage children from heavy surf. The dangerous surf conditions have proven fatal, prompting authorities to issue a warning to beachgoers.

Official Statement

"This month has been deadly when it comes to beach drownings in the area of Puerto Rico," stated Capt. Jose E. Díaz, commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Juan. He emphasized the seriousness of the situation and urged people to exercise caution given the hazardous conditions.

High Surf Advisory

A high surf advisory was issued for Puerto Rico's northwest, north, and northeast coasts, with waves reaching heights of up to 12 feet (4 meters). The advisory is expected to remain in effect until late Thursday, posing significant risks to beachgoers.

Warning and Limitations

Capt. Díaz highlighted the absence of lifeguards at most open ocean beaches in Puerto Rico, underscoring the need for individuals to recognize the gravity of the circumstances. He also expressed concerns about the limitations on search and rescue operations due to the perilous conditions.
