UAW Leader Fain Accuses Stellantis CEO Tavares of Price Gouging and Contract Violations

UAW President Fain criticizes Stellantis CEO Tavares for price gouging and contract violations, amid declining sales and ongoing cost-cutting measures.

United Auto Workers President, Shawn Fain, has intensified his criticism of Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares in a recent video, accusing him of price gouging consumers and breaching the union's labor contract with the automaker. This marks another chapter in the ongoing dispute between the UAW and Stellantis after contentious collective bargaining negotiations with Detroit automakers last year.

In a 2:30-minute video posted on Friday, Fain unleashed a barrage of accusations against Tavares, stating, "Something is rotten at Stellantis. Sales are down, profits are down, and CEO pay is way, way up. The problem isn't the market at GM and Ford; auto sales are up, and the problem isn't the auto workers. The problem is this man, Carlos Tavares." Fain's statements came on the heels of ongoing back-and-forths between the CEO and the union leader, which have exposed a deepening discord over labor relations and financial practices.

Escalation of Criticism

Fain's latest comments have taken the feud to a new level, with accusations directed at Tavares' price gouging tactics and contract breaches. The union president specifically called out Stellantis for halting plans to reopen an assembly plant in Illinois, further intensifying the dispute over labor commitments.

In response to Tavares' recent criticism of the UAW-Stellantis workforce and quality issues at a Detroit truck plant, Fain countered with pointed allegations. "Fact, for years, Stellantis has sold fewer cars, but made more in profits. What does that tell you? They're price gouging. Now they've gone too far, and they're tanking their own sales," Fain asserted. He also aimed to hold Tavares accountable for attempts to reverse commitments made during the last contract, specifically regarding the Belvedere Assembly plant.
