He disclosed that Ukraine had initiated a cross-border counteroffensive in August, leading to the engagement of the first North Korean troops in the Kursk Oblast.

Kovalenko's revelations were validated by Ukraine's defense minister, Rustem Umerov, who referred to the encounter as a "small engagement." This occurrence underscored North Korea's involvement in the conflict, with Umerov emphasizing that the skirmish served as a definitive signal of North Korea's participation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that North Korean soldiers, estimated to number around 11,000, had already incurred losses in Kursk.
