As the sound of Russian bombs echoed through northeastern Ukraine, families found themselves forced to leave their old lives behind. Evacuation buses became the only refuge for many, hastily filled with whatever belongings they could gather in the midst of chaos and fear.
Among the evacuees, Halyna Tarasenko, 72, anxiously worried about her husband who refused to leave their village. She frantically rummaged through her bags, fearing her important papers were left behind, while the ominous thudding of bombs continued in the distance.
A Glimpse of Hope
Despite the uncertain and fearful atmosphere, a team of rescuers stood by, ready to assist the fleeing families. For many, there would be more buses and more stories of escape as the conflict raged on.
