A man from Florida has been apprehended after embarking on a one-of-a-kind oceanic journey in a homemade hamster wheel. Reza Baluchi, aged 44, was intercepted by the US Coast Guard (USCG) approximately 70 miles off the coast of Georgia on 26 August. Baluchi allegedly expressed his intent to continue his unconventional voyage all the way to the UK. Court documents reveal that the USCG deemed his makeshift boat, comprised of buoys and wiring, as dangerously unseaworthy.
Interestingly, Baluchi began his expedition just days before Hurricane Franklin, a category four storm, made its way towards the Americas. Despite the hazardous conditions, Baluchi refused to disembark for a period of three days, ultimately necessitating a rescue operation.
During the ordeal, Baluchi claimed to have a Florida registration on board but failed to produce it upon request. He also informed officials that his desired destination was London, England. Authorities discovered that Baluchi was armed with two small knives, threatening self-harm if they attempted to intervene.
Following Baluchi's false bomb threat, bomb disposal experts were summoned to the scene. Baluchi eventually admitted that the threat was a hoax after provisions were offered. The USCG successfully removed Baluchi from the vessel on 29 August, concluding his latest encounter with law enforcement.
This incident is not Baluchi's first brush with the USCG, as court documents reveal previous encounters in 2014, 2016, and 2021 involving similar homemade crafts.
