A recent incident involving an outbreak of listeria at a fast food diner in the US has resulted in three fatalities. The source of the infection has been traced back to the ice cream machine at a Frugals restaurant in Tacoma, Washington. Health officials have confirmed that all milkshake flavors sold by the establishment were affected. Six individuals, ranging in age from 40 to 79, were hospitalized as a result, and sadly, three of them succumbed to the infection. These individuals had pre-existing conditions that compromised their immune systems, making them more susceptible to the disease. The state health department indicated that the ice cream machine at the family-owned diner had not been adequately cleaned. It is important to note that this incident is isolated, and no other establishments in the chain have been affected. Although the machine was last used on 8 August, listeria can still pose a risk up to 70 days later. Local authorities are urging individuals who consumed milkshakes at the diner between 29 May and 7 August and fall into categories such as pregnant women, those above the age of 65, or individuals with weakened immune systems to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms including fatigue, headaches, seizures, or vomiting. Frugals released a statement via Instagram expressing their cooperation with health officials and their commitment to identify and contain the source of the listeria outbreak. The diner has taken immediate steps to have the affected equipment professionally cleaned and has temporarily closed the ice cream machines at their other locations. Frugals emphasized their deep remorse for any harm caused and their dedication to maintaining their high operational standards to prevent such incidents in the future.
