URI Student Makes Waves with Fisheries Research Internship

The world of scientific research offers a vast landscape of exploration, with opportunities to delve into diverse fields and uncover new knowledge. For many aspiring scientists, gaining practical experience through internships and research programs can be instrumental in shaping their career paths and fueling their passion for discovery.

One such individual is Michael O'Connor, a dedicated undergraduate student pursuing his studies in marine science. With an unwavering enthusiasm for understanding the intricacies of the ocean and its inhabitants, O'Connor has embarked on a transformative journey at Rutgers University's Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory in Port Norris, New Jersey.

A World of Marine Research

Immersed in this dynamic research environment, O'Connor has been actively involved in a range of projects that have broadened his understanding of Marine Research. He has been working independently on his own research project, utilizing camera-mounted fish traps to monitor changes in fish distributions. This innovative technique allows researchers to gain valuable insights into the movements and behavior of commercially important structure-associated fish, such as black sea bass.

Beyond his individual research endeavors, O'Connor has also contributed to broader survey efforts. He has assisted with wild oyster surveys aboard a commercial oyster vessel, gaining firsthand experience in the complexities of sustainable shellfish harvesting. Additionally, he has participated in tagging surf clams and ribbed mussels at the New Jersey Aquaculture Innovation Center, contributing to ongoing research on these important marine resources.

Gaining Experience and Discovering Passions

O'Connor's experiences at the Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory have been profoundly impactful, shaping not only his technical skills but also his passion for Gaining Experience in the field of marine science. The opportunity to work alongside a diverse group of interns and researchers has provided him with invaluable mentorship and support.

"Experiencing a totally new research environment, not just at a marine field station but with a diverse cast of interns and researchers, has been really rewarding," O'Connor shares. "Everyone has been beyond supportive of my goals and research."

Through his involvement in the NSF program, O'Connor has discovered a niche within Marine Research that aligns perfectly with his aspirations. He expresses a deep sense of fulfillment in working on a project that he envisions pursuing not only through his undergraduate years but also into graduate school and beyond.

"This internship has instilled in me a deep passion for fisheries research, and through the connections and mentorship I receive, I feel well-prepared to contribute to this growing field and bring about meaningful change," O'Connor reflects.
