US Govt Organizes Charter Flight from Haiti Amid Violence and Famine Crisis
The U.S. arranges charter flight from Haiti to the U.S. amid violence. Citizens urged to fill out intake form for travel.
The situation in Haiti has reached a critical point, with the U.S. government stepping in to organize a charter flight for those with valid passports to leave the country.
Dangerous Travel Conditions
The flight will depart from the Cap-Haitien International Airport, as the main airport in the capital, Port-au-Prince, faces significant travel limitations due to the ongoing violence in the country. The State Department has issued a warning about the perilous journey from Port-au-Prince to Cap-Haitien, advising individuals to consider taking the flight only if they can safely reach the airport in Cap-Haitien.
The distance between the airport and the capital city is approximately 120 miles, with the ongoing conflict making the journey increasingly hazardous for citizens and eligible family members attempting to flee the country.
Food and Aid Shortages
The crisis in Haiti is further exacerbated by the presence of violent gangs, leading to severe disruptions in the distribution of food, water, and medical supplies. As a result, over 1.4 million Haitians are on the brink of famine, while more than 4 million require food aid, facing the grim reality of consuming just one meal a day or, in some cases, nothing at all.
Officials are struggling to provide essential supplies to makeshift shelters and other locations, as gang violence continues to strangle the lives of individuals in Port-au-Prince and beyond. The violence has resulted in a wave of attacks, including burning police stations, besieging the main international airport, and freeing over 4,000 inmates from two prisons.
Impact on Haitian Citizens
More than 200 gangs are reportedly operating in Haiti, with nearly two dozen concentrated in Port-au-Prince and its surrounding areas, controlling approximately 80% of the capital and vying for additional territory. The ongoing violence and displacement have left over 15,000 individuals homeless, with countless families forced to flee their homes multiple times due to threats from armed gangs.
The dire circumstances have pushed citizens to desperate measures, with families and individuals struggling to find shelter, food, and safety amidst the turmoil. The situation has also taken a toll on livelihoods, forcing individuals like Erigeunes Jeffrand, a father of four, to abandon their means of earning a living due to the intimidation and violence inflicted by gangs.
Humanitarian Appeal and Aid Efforts
The humanitarian crisis in Haiti has prompted urgent appeals for assistance, as approximately 5.5 million people - nearly half of the country's population - are in need of humanitarian aid. To address this pressing need, USAID has pledged $25 million in addition to the $33 million announced earlier, aiming to provide crucial support to the affected population.
Despite these efforts, the humanitarian appeal for Haiti remains significantly underfunded, with the World Food Program urgently requiring $95 million in the next six months to address the escalating conflict and hunger plaguing the nation. The situation continues to evoke deep concern and fear for the future, as the relentless cycle of violence and food insecurity persists in Haiti.
