US Intelligence Officials Determine Putin Unlikely Ordered Navalny's Death
U.S. officials believe Putin responsible for Navalny's death but found no direct evidence of his involvement in the timing or ordering.
Following the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny in February, U.S. intelligence officials have made determinations regarding the involvement of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
While U.S. officials attribute ultimate responsibility to Putin for Navalny's death, no direct evidence has been found to conclude that Putin ordered the timing or directly orchestrated the opposition leader's death. This revelation comes from an official source who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
President Biden's Response
Shortly after Navalny's passing, President Joe Biden held Putin ultimately responsible for the incident. However, Biden refrained from directly accusing Putin of giving the order.
Navalny, a prominent opposition figure in Russia, passed away at the age of 47 while serving a 19-year sentence on extremism charges. He had been in confinement since January 2021 after returning from Germany, where he was recovering from a nerve-agent poisoning that he attributed to the Kremlin.
Russian officials have consistently denied any involvement in Navalny's poisoning and subsequent demise. They have maintained that Navalny's death was due to natural causes.
