U.S. Tourist Killed by Elephant in Livingstone, Zambia
U.S. tourist, 64, killed by elephant near Zambian Cultural Bridge. Second fatal attack on tourists in Zambia this year.

In a tragic incident on Wednesday, 64-year-old Juliana Gle Tourneau, a tourist from New Mexico, United States, lost her life during a wildlife viewing excursion near the Maramba Cultural Bridge in Livingstone, Zambia.
Tourneau was among a group of tourists watching a herd of elephants when the fatal incident occurred. The vehicle in which she was traveling was stopped due to the elephant traffic near the bridge. Suddenly, one of the elephants attacked the vehicle, throwing Tourneau out and trampling her, leading to her untimely demise around 17:50 local time.
Second Fatal Incident in 2023
This marks the second fatal elephant attack on tourists in Zambia this year, following a similar tragedy in March. During that incident, an American tourist lost their life, and five others were injured when an elephant charged their truck during a game drive in a Zambian national park.
Southern Province Police Commissioner Auxensio Daka conveyed the details of the unfortunate event to the Zambian national broadcaster, ZNBC. The authorities have since urged all tourists to exercise extreme caution when observing wildlife in Zambia.
