USC Student Cleared of Charges in Stabbing Death of Homeless Man

USC student won't face charges for fatally stabbing homeless man during car break-in, deemed act of self-defense by L.A. DA.

The Los Angeles District Attorney announced on Thursday that the University of Southern California (USC) student, Ivan Gallegos, will not face charges after fatally stabbing a homeless man, Xavier Cerf, on Monday, June 17.

The L.A. DA George Gascón stated, "After careful consideration and a thorough review of all available evidence, we have decided not to pursue charges against USC student Ivan Gallegos. We believe that Mr. Gallegos’s actions were driven by a genuine fear for his life and the lives of others. Our heart goes out to the deceased’s family, friends and everyone impacted by this tragic incident."

Incident Details

The incident occurred when two of Gallegos' peers witnessed Cerf attempting to break into multiple cars on Greek Row. Subsequently, the three USC students confronted Cerf, resulting in an altercation during which Gallegos allegedly stabbed Cerf, who later succumbed to his injuries in the University Park neighborhood in Los Angeles.

No Criminal Record

Gallegos, aged 19, had no criminal record and cooperated with the police, stating that he acted in self-defense. He was initially arrested on suspicion of murder but will not face charges. Gascón's office mentioned that further details about the investigation will be released at a later time.
