USS Georgia submarine deployed to Middle East amid escalating tensions
The U.S. is reinforcing military presence in the Middle East amid escalating tensions, discussing Israel’s operations and urging a cease-fire in Gaza.
The USS Georgia guided missile submarine has been dispatched to the Middle East as the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group, equipped with F-35C fighters, expedites its transit to the region due to escalating tensions, according to the Pentagon's announcement on Sunday.
During a conversation with Israeli Defense Secretary Yoav Gallant, Secretary Austin reassured the United States' commitment to defend Israel and highlighted the strengthening of U.S. military force posture and capabilities throughout the Middle East.
Discussions on Regional Issues
The two defense officials discussed Israel's operations in Gaza, emphasizing the importance of mitigating civilian harm, progress towards securing a cease-fire, and the release of hostages held in Gaza. They also addressed efforts to deter Iran, Hezbollah, and other Iran-allied groups in the region.
Meanwhile, the U.K., Germany, and France leaders released a joint statement calling for a cease-fire in Gaza, the release of hostages, and the "unfettered" delivery of aid to Gaza. They urged Iran and its proxies, including Lebanon's Hezbollah, to refrain from actions that could further escalate the regional conflict, emphasizing that no nation stands to gain from a further escalation in the Middle East.
Escalating Casualties in Gaza
The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with Gaza's Hamas-run Health Ministry reporting that a further 142 people had been killed in Israeli strikes over the past 48 hours, bringing the Palestinian death toll in Gaza since the war began to39,897 people. The situation escalated after Hamas militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7, leading to severe repercussions and ongoing hostilities.
Additionally, a deadly Israeli strike on a school-turned-shelter in Gaza City resulted in at least 80 fatalities, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region. Despite Israel's military assertion that it targeted a Hamas command center, conflicting narratives have emerged, with Hamas disputing the Israeli claim and emphasizing the presence of civilians seeking shelter.
