As President Vladimir V. Putin continues his assertive actions in Ukraine and maintains a firm grip on internal dissent, he is poised to command attention this week at two significant events that will underscore his control over the country’s politics and his resolve to emerge victorious in Ukraine.
On Tuesday, the 71-year-old Mr. Putin will officially commence his fifth term as Russia’s president in a meticulously planned inauguration ceremony at the Kremlin. This event is set to highlight his enduring influence in Russian politics.
Victory Day Parade
Following the inauguration, on Thursday, Putin will lead the Victory Day parade in Red Square. This annual display of military strength has in recent years aimed to symbolically connect Russia’s involvement in Ukraine with the Soviet triumph over Nazi Germany in World War II.
The Kremlin is anticipated to nominate a new prime minister and five key ministers, including foreign and defense officials. While the individuals in these six positions may be reappointed, the composition of the upcoming Russian government will offer insights into the country’s direction in the years ahead.
