In a recent study, it has been observed that voice assistants like Siri and Alexa are not well-equipped to provide instructions for performing CPR. While these virtual helpers have become an integral part of our daily routines, they seem to fall short when it comes to urgent scenarios like cardiac arrests. Researchers in the US conducted a series of tests and asked voice assistants common questions regarding CPR. Unfortunately, the responses were far from satisfactory. Some assistants claimed ignorance or failed to comprehend the queries altogether. One even hilariously responded with a completely unrelated answer, mentioning the Indian Penal Code. Out of the 32 responses, only 9 urged users to call emergency services, which is a critical step during such emergencies. Furthermore, only a handful of voice assistants offered verbal instructions, with some redirecting users to websites instead. Interestingly, more specific questions yielded slightly better answers, particularly when using AI-powered ChatGPT. Dr. Adam Landman, co-author of the study, highlights the importance of voice assistants providing verbal instructions, given that effective CPR requires the use of both hands. Dr. Landman believes it is crucial for all voice assistants to offer standard verbal instructions. Microsoft's Bing Chat tool has already taken a step in the right direction by immediately directing users to call emergency services and providing basic CPR steps. Google stated it is continuously working to improve its voice assistant, stressing the significance of collaboration with the medical community. As for Amazon and Apple, no official comments have been provided regarding their voice assistants' performance in this specific area. Let's remember that in critical situations like cardiac arrests, relying solely on voice assistants may not always be the best course of action. It is essential to reach out to emergency services promptly and receive proper training in CPR techniques.
