Walmart has issued a recall for high-powered magnetic balls due to safety concerns for children. The product, which was sold in 216-piece sets in clear plastic cases and tin storage boxes, has been linked to serious injuries and fatalities when ingested. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has stated that if these magnets are swallowed, they can attract to each other or to other metal objects, leading to digestive system blockages and potentially life-threatening complications. The CPSC reported that between 2017 and 2021, there were approximately 2,400 cases of magnet ingestions treated in hospital emergency departments, resulting in seven deaths, two of which occurred outside the United States.
The recall affects approximately 4,240 units of the Relax Magnetic Balls which were sold exclusively online at Walmart.com between February 2022 and April 2023, priced between $14 and $15. Consumers who purchased the recalled product can contact Joybuy for a prepaid label to return the item for a refund. Joybuy can be reached at 302-426-4543 or via email at oversea-service@jd.com.
This recall follows a series of warnings issued by the CPSC regarding the dangers of toy magnet sets. In August, the agency urged consumers to discontinue use of a magnetic ball set sold on Walmart.com for around $30 after the product's seller, Guanjia Trade Co. of China, failed to respond to the CPSC's recall request.
