Warning of Catastrophe in Gaza as Israel Considers Ground Invasion in Rafah

Israel Warned of Catastrophic Consequences for Potential Ground Invasion in Gaza

On Saturday, key mediators and neighboring countries of Israel warned of catastrophic consequences if the military launches a ground invasion in Gaza's southern city of Rafah. The warning comes after Israeli airstrikes killed at least 44 Palestinians, including over a dozen children, in Rafah. The announcement of a potential invasion set off panic among Gaza's 2.3 million residents, with more than half of the population being concentrated in Rafah, which borders Egypt.

International Warnings and Friction with the US

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry stated that any Israeli ground offensive in Rafah would have "disastrous consequences" and could potentially threaten the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. Additionally, Qatar and Saudi Arabia also warned of severe repercussions if such an invasion were to occur. There is also rising tension between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the United States, with US officials cautioning that a Rafah invasion without proper plans for civilians would lead to a humanitarian disaster.

Concerns of Humanitarian Catastrophe

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock emphasized that an Israeli offensive on Rafah would result in a "humanitarian catastrophe in the making" and highlighted the inability of Gaza's population to simply disappear. The city is a rare entry point for much-needed food and medical supplies for Gaza and is currently packed with displaced individuals who have evacuated from other parts of the territory following previous Israeli warnings.

Civilian Casualties and Infrastructure Damage

The airstrikes in the Rafah area resulted in the deaths of 28 people, including multiple members of families and young children. In addition, Israeli forces targeted Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, killing at least two people and injuring several others. The hospital, which is providing shelter for displaced individuals, has been severely impacted, with staff unable to move between buildings due to intense fire. The overall death toll from the ongoing offensive has risen to 28,064, with the majority being women and children. Israel holds Hamas responsible for civilian deaths due to its combat operations within civilian areas.

Israeli Military Operations and International Response

Israel's army chief reported that over 2,000 Hamas fighters in Khan Younis had been killed in airstrikes and ground combat. The United Nations has highlighted the severe overcrowding in Rafah, with the city hosting 1.4 million displaced individuals, a large influx compared to its usual population of less than 300,000.

Tensions and Tragic Incidents

The conflict has also led to tragic incidents, such as the deaths of two medics from the Palestinian Red Crescent who were found in a destroyed ambulance after attempting a rescue mission. Additionally, an Israeli airstrike in the central town of Deir al-Balah resulted in the deaths of five individuals and wounded several others.

As the situation in Gaza remains dire, the international community continues to monitor the unfolding events and attempts to mitigate the potential for further escalation and human suffering.
