Wave of Violence Targets Mexican Politicians Ahead of General Elections
Violence targets Mexican politicians ahead of the upcoming elections, with 30 candidates murdered. Security forces to be deployed for election security.

As the June 2 elections approach, Mexico has witnessed a surge of violence targeting political figures. The latest incidents include the murder of a mayoral candidate in Morelos and a shooting of another candidate in Jalisco.
In Morelos state, mayoral candidate Ricardo Arizmendi was tragically murdered, despite having no record of security incidents or requests for protective measures. In a separate incident in Jalisco state, candidate Gilberto Palomar and two of his aides were shot inside a home.
Impact of Violence
Since the start of the election campaign in September 2023, the Mexican government has reported 22 candidates murdered, although this figure is contested by the nongovernmental organization Data Civica. The spate of violence has cast a shadow over the electoral process, with a total of 30 candidates reported to have been killed.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has pledged to deploy over 27,000 troops, including military personnel and National Guard members, to ensure security on election day. This measure aims to provide a safe environment for voters and candidates participating in the upcoming general elections.
Recent Incidents
Just last week, nine people lost their lives in attacks against mayoral candidates in Chiapas, while earlier in the month, six individuals, including a minor and a mayoral candidate, were killed in an ambush in La Concordia. In addition, a mayoral hopeful was fatally shot just as she commenced her campaign last month, highlighting the relentless wave of violence targeting politicians.
Final Preparations for Elections
With the election date drawing near, the Mexican populace remains on edge, with concerns about the safety of candidates and voters at the forefront. The ongoing violence has raised apprehensions about the integrity of the electoral process and the ability of candidates to campaign freely and safely.
