Wayne LaPierre Temporarily Banned from Leading NRA, Independent Monitor Denied in Corruption Trial

Wayne LaPierre was temporarily barred from leading the NRA after a corruption trial found financial misconduct within the organization.

A New York judge issues a temporary ban on Wayne LaPierre from leading the National Rifle Association (NRA) again, following a civil corruption trial. The jury found that LaPierre had misused millions of dollars of NRA funds for personal use, leading to financial mismanagement within the organization.

Legal Actions and Restrictions

In response to the trial's findings, the New York Attorney General Letitia James sought significant remedies, including the permanent removal of LaPierre from his position. However, Judge Joel Cohen only imposed a 10-year ban, falling short of the requested permanent removal. Furthermore, the judge did not appoint an independent monitor to oversee the NRA's financial activities, a measure also proposed by the attorney general.

Individual Liabilities and Penalties

The trial revealed that LaPierre had diverted a substantial amount of funds, causing a monetary harm of $5.4 million to the NRA, of which he has repaid $1 million. Additionally, other executives, such as John Frazer and Wilson "Woody" Phillips, were found to have violated their duties, with Phillips causing $2 million in monetary harm to the organization.

While no restrictions were imposed on Frazer, a separate agreement was reached for Phillips, who will be barred from holding fiduciary positions with any New York nonprofit for a decade. Moreover, he is required to undergo a training program and pay $2 million in damages to the NRA.

Defendants' Responses

During the trial, LaPierre's attorney, P. Kent Correll, argued against the ban, stating that LaPierre was retired and had no intention of returning to the NRA. The NRA, along with its legal representatives, opposed the appointment of an independent monitor, contending that the organization had already taken measures to address the issues, including personnel changes and the appointment of new leaders.
