WHO Reports Global Health Progress Amidst Financial Uncertainties
WHO's 2024 Results Report shows progress on global health goals despite financial challenges, with achievements in universal health coverage, emergency protection, and improved well-being.

The global landscape of health is in constant flux, marked by both significant strides and persistent challenges. The World Health Organization's (WHO) Results Report 2024 offers a comprehensive snapshot of this dynamic terrain, illuminating the progress made towards achieving the ambitious Global Health Goals while acknowledging the obstacles that lie ahead.
Released on the eve of the Seventy-eighth World Health Assembly (19–27 May 2025), the report serves as a mid-term assessment of WHO's performance in implementing its Programme budget for 2024–2025. It delves into the achievements and hurdles encountered in pursuing the strategic priorities outlined in the Thirteenth General Programme of Work, spanning from 2019 to 2025.
Achievements: A Testament to Collaborative Efforts
The report paints a picture of remarkable progress across over 150 countries and territories, underscoring the impact of WHO's support in driving positive change in global health. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, emphasizes this point, stating, "This report shows how, with WHO’s support, many countries are making progress on a huge range of health indicators, helping their populations to live healthier lives, giving them greater access to essential health services, and keeping them safer against health emergencies.”
A key highlight is the substantial advancement towards the ambitious "triple billion" targets set by WHO. These targets aim to achieve:
- 1 billion more people benefiting from universal health coverage.
- 1 billion more people better protected from health emergencies.
- 1 billion more people enjoying better health and well-being.
The report indicates significant progress in all three areas, demonstrating the effectiveness of collaborative efforts to improve global health indicators.
Despite these achievements, the path towards universal health coverage and improved global health is not without its challenges. Financial constraints pose a significant obstacle, with reduced foreign aid and health budgets straining already fragile health systems, particularly in underserved communities.
The threat of pandemics remains a pressing concern, and funding shortfalls could undermine hard-won progress in disease control and preparedness. Furthermore, the need for sustainable financing models is crucial to ensure the long-term viability of global health initiatives.
WHO's Response: Embracing Innovation and Efficiency
Recognizing these challenges, WHO is actively taking steps to enhance its efficiency and effectiveness. Digital innovation is being leveraged to improve operational transparency, support services are being strengthened, and risk and security systems are being fortified. Data generation, access, and utilization are also being prioritized, paving the way for more evidence-based programming and timely impact on the ground.
The Results Report 2024 serves as a powerful reminder of the interconnected nature of global health. It highlights the significant progress made in advancing Health for All while emphasizing the need for continued collaboration, innovation, and sustainable financing to overcome existing challenges and secure a healthier future for all.
