Wisconsin Woman Sentenced to 11 Years for Killing Her Sex Trafficker, Citing Legal Defense

Wisconsin woman Chrystul Kizer received an 11-year sentence for killing her sex trafficker, arguing legal grounds for her actions under state law.

A Wisconsin woman, Chrystul Kizer, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for killing sex trafficker Randall Volar. Kizer pleaded guilty to reckless homicide in the 2018 death of Volar, who she alleged had been trafficking her.

She will serve her sentence without eligibility for early release and is expected to be released in 2033. Kizer, now 24, shot Volar and burned his house down when she was 17. Her defense cited a 2008 state law that absolves sex trafficking victims of offenses committed as a direct result of being trafficked. The state Supreme Court ruled in 2022 that Kizer could raise this defense during her trial. Anti-violence groups have defended Kizer, saying that trafficking victims may feel trapped and resort to taking action themselves. The case has raised discussions about the legal protections available to sex trafficking victims and the interpretation of the law in such cases.
