WWII Veteran Embraces Ukrainian President in Emotional D-Day Anniversary Exchange
At D-Day anniversary, American veteran praised President Zelensky as hero, thanked for saving Europe, emotional moment captured and shared widely.
On Thursday, thousands gathered at Omaha Beach in Normandy, France, to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. The emotional exchange between a World War II veteran and President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine was broadcast on large screens to applause from the audience. The veteran, Melvin Hurwitz, 99, of Frederick, Md., expressed his gratitude to Mr. Zelensky for his heroic efforts.
Touching Encounter
Seated in a wheelchair with a blue blanket draped over his lap, Mr. Hurwitz, introduced to President Zelensky by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, embraced the Ukrainian leader and referred to him as the "savior of the people." In response, Mr. Zelensky humbly acknowledged Mr. Hurwitz's role in saving Europe.
Mr. Hurwitz's great-niece, Sarah Hurwitz Robey, confirmed his identity and shared his heartfelt words, "You're our hero," as President Zelensky knelt next to him for a photograph, capturing the poignant moment.
