X takes drastic measures after Taylor Swift deepfake controversy

Social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, has made the decision to block all searches related to Taylor Swift following the dissemination of AI-generated explicit images of the singer. This bold move comes after X received criticism for its failure to promptly remove the inappropriate content from its site. Joe Benarroch, X's Head of Business Operations, justified the "temporary" search block as a precautionary measure to prioritize user safety. Since Saturday, attempts to search for Taylor Swift's name on X have resulted in an error message stating, “Something went wrong.”

The unusual step taken by X hints at the platform's struggle to fulfill content-moderation duties, a task typically associated with mainstream social media sites. This move is seen as a consequence of the drastic reduction of X's workforce, with billionaire owner Elon Musk having terminated 80 % of the company's employees since acquiring the platform in 2022. Musk's decision led to the dismantling of the website's "trust and safety" team, responsible for content moderation.

Benarroch's statement did not address inquiries regarding the reason for the comprehensive search block instead of more aggressive moderation, and whether the staff reductions had impeded X's ability to police its platform. 

As of Monday afternoon, searches for Taylor Swift's name continued to be blocked, although minor modifications allowed users to bypass the restriction, such as by searching her name within quotation marks or including additional words.

Elon Musk's reaction

In response to the coverage of the search block, Elon Musk posted a dismissive "lol" on a related social media post, potentially indicating his casual attitude towards the controversy. The decision to restrict searches undermines X's efforts to position itself as a hub for real-time events. Notably, this development coincides with X's attempt to present itself as a responsible company ahead of Chief Executive Linda Yaccarino's scheduled testimony at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on child sexual exploitation online.

Addressing the issue, X released a statement on Friday, emphasizing its active removal of "Non-Consensual Nudity" images and the close monitoring of further violations. Additionally, Benarroch announced the platform's intention to hire 100 content moderators as part of the establishment of a new "Trust and Safety center of excellence" in Austin, although no specific launch date was provided.

Fans against fake content

As the fake nude images of Swift circulated on the platform, her devoted fan base took action by inundating the site with authentic images, reporting problematic accounts en masse, and leveraging viral hashtags like "Protect Taylor Swift." The proliferation of AI-generated explicit content, including "deepfakes," has surged due to accessible tools that can produce realistic videos and photos by superimposing real faces. Notably, a 2019 study by Sensity AI revealed that these fakes predominantly target women.

Despite being one of X's prominent accounts with 94 million followers, Taylor Swift has refrained from posting on the platform since January 15. Her representatives have not provided any comments regarding the recent developments. While federal laws do not explicitly prohibit the creation or dissemination of deepfakes, several U.S. states and countries like Britain have implemented their own restrictions.

The dissemination of AI-generated images, particularly those of Swift, has raised alarms, prompting the White House to underscore the growing issue. Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre emphasized the pivotal role of platforms like X in enforcing regulations to combat misinformation and prevent the spread of nonconsensual intimate imagery.
