Astrophysicist Uses Art to Inspire Black & Brown Youth in STEM

The pursuit of knowledge has always been a fundamental human endeavor, driving us to explore the universe and our place within it. In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of Science Education in fostering innovation and understanding across diverse communities. However, access to quality science education and opportunities for engagement remain unequal, particularly for Black and brown youth who often face systemic barriers.

Bridging the Gap: Mentorship and Diversity in STEM

Dr. Nia Imara, a UC Santa Cruz astrophysicist and artist, is leading the charge in dismantling these barriers through her impactful work with underserved youth. Recognizing the lack of representation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, Dr. Imara founded Onaketa, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free online tutoring in STEM subjects for Black and brown students nationwide.

Onaketa pairs middle and high school students with Black and brown scientists who act as mentors, guiding them through challenging concepts and inspiring them to pursue their passions in STEM. This personalized approach addresses the critical need for role models who reflect the students' backgrounds and experiences, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment.

The program has already made a significant impact, with six tutors mentoring over 100 students across the country. By providing access to expert guidance and support, Onaketa is not only enhancing academic performance but also nurturing the next generation of STEM leaders from marginalized communities.

Dr. Imara's work extends beyond Onaketa. Through her book, "Painting with Light," she explores the intersection of art and science, highlighting the achievements of Black and brown scientists throughout history. By showcasing these diverse voices, Dr. Imara aims to inspire young minds and demonstrate that STEM is a field where everyone can contribute.

Chima McGruder, an Onaketa mentor with a background in astrophysics, emphasizes the importance of representation in STEM. He shares that many students he mentors haven't encountered Black or brown scientists as teachers or role models before, making his presence a source of inspiration and guidance. His experience underscores the profound impact that having visible role models can have on shaping aspirations and fostering a sense of possibility.
