Bullet Removed From Gazan Woman's Head After 4 Months of Agony

A Gazan woman was hit by a bullet, lodged near her optic nerve, and received successful surgery in Egypt after a ceasefire allowed her to leave Gaza.

Cairo - Sarah al-Awady, an 18-year-old Gazan, suffered a bullet wound to her head from an Israeli quadcopter drone while in a tent with her family in Al-Zawaida, Gaza, on Oct. 22, 2024. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated they target only military objectives and take precautions to mitigate civilian harm. However, they could not provide details about the specific incident without more information.

Al-Awady underwent a challenging medical ordeal in Gaza, where doctors couldn't remove the bullet lodged behind her right eye due to limited capacity. Despite her insistence to stay in the hospital, her pain persisted without a clear plan for relief.

Dr. Tawfik's Involvement and Difficulties in Cross-Border Treatment

In early November, she was seen by Dr. Mohamed Tawfik, an Egyptian volunteer medic, who attempted to seek help for her from his father, a veteran ophthalmologist. However, due to the closed southern Rafah border crossing and the ongoing war, Dr. Tawfik faced significant hurdles in reaching Gaza to assist al-Awady.

Al-Awady applied for treatment abroad, encountering challenges with lengthy wait times and uncertainty about finding a resolution. However, a glimmer of hope emerged with a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas on Jan. 19, 2024, allowing her to return to her home in northern Gaza for a brief period before receiving the news of her transfer to Egypt for medical treatment.

Transfer and Surgical Treatment in Egypt

After traveling to Egypt, al-Awady was moved to a hospital in Al-Sharqia Governorate, where a collaboration between ophthalmology, neurosurgery, and radiology teams was initiated to plan the excision of the bullet. The surgery aimed to access the bullet's location while minimizing potential damage, particularly to her optic nerve.

Despite the risks involved, such as the possibility of internal bleeding and potential loss or impairment of her eye's vision, al-Awady displayed courage and resilience as she faced the surgical procedure. The surgery's successful outcome, however, revealed complications due to infection and abscess from the rusted bullet, which further highlighted the toll of the prolonged ordeal she had endured.

Path to Recovery and Ongoing Challenges

In the aftermath of the successful surgery, al-Awady experienced an emotional release as she open her eyes post-operation, grateful for the positive outcome and expressing a renewed sense of hope. While her current eyesight level was preserved, there remained a need to address further issues, such as retinal detachment, which the medical team aimed to resolve.

Despite the physical progress achieved, al-Awady grappled with the emotional weight of separation from her family left behind in Gaza. Understanding the complexity of her experiences, she expressed a desire to retain the bullet as a symbol of her resilience, contemplating framing it as a tangible representation of her strength and journey.

As al-Awady continues her path to recovery, she reflects on the bittersweet nature of her recent experiences, finding herself in an environment offering hope for healing while simultaneously grappling with the profound absence of her familial support during this challenging medical.

International Response and Broader Context

The incidents surrounding al-Awady's injury and subsequent medical journey shed light on the ongoing humanitarian crisis experienced by civilians amidst the Israel-Gaza conflict. The challenges faced by individuals like al-Awady in accessing critical medical treatment underscore the urgent need for comprehensive responses to the needs of affected populations.

As the broader geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, initiatives aimed at facilitating access to medical aid and support for civilians impacted by the conflict remain crucial in addressing the persistent humanitarian challenges in the region.
