Denver Women's Ski Trip Turns Into Overnight Ordeal After Bus Stuck in Snowstorm
Denver ski trip turns into overnight ordeal as bus gets stuck in snowstorm behind jackknifed semis, testing perseverance and patience.
On a weekly ski trip for approximately 50 women from the Denver area, an unforeseen circumstance turned a routine journey into an overnight challenge. The bus, returning from Vail, became immobilized in a snowstorm due to jackknifed semi tractor-trailers. What initially seemed as an inconvenience ultimately became a test of resilience and solidarity.
An Unplanned 22-Hour Journey
Brenda Djorup, a retired teacher and one of the women on the trip, described the experience as both a test of perseverance and patience. Despite the adversity, the group utilized the time to strengthen their bonds, assist fellow passengers with medical needs, and ensure everyone's safety.
"It was a testament to women who have dealt with other crises in our lives and knew how to handle a situation that was unexpected and uncomfortable and keeping things in its right perspective," said Djorup.
The group confronted challenges such as limited provisions, running out of food and water, and restricted access to bathroom facilities. Djorup recounted how the women supported each other, demonstrating resilience and compassion in the face of adversity.
The Thera-ski Bus: 40 Years of Volunteering
The women were participants in the tenth and final weekly ski trip organized by the Thera-ski Bus, a volunteer-run women's only ski group that has been in operation for approximately four decades. With participants ranging in age, including some in their 70s, the group faced unexpected obstacles that tested their resolve.
A Nightmarish Journey
After being forced off the hill at Vail due to a lightning storm, the women encountered further setbacks as their journey home was impeded. Their bus experienced mechanical issues, had to be towed over a mountain pass, and subsequently became stranded behind disabled tractor-trailers as night descended.
Despite the difficulties, the group exhibited fortitude by providing aid to those in need. They shared limited resources and improvised solutions to address medical and sustenance needs, embodying solidarity and resilience.
Seeking Assistance and Advocacy
Utilizing their cellphones when possible, the women reached out to authorities and local media to highlight their predicament. Their aim was to raise awareness about the impact of the highway closure, calling attention to the disruption caused to visitors and the local economy.
Mary Wagner emphasized the group's efforts to channel their frustration into constructive action. Their initiative included contacting the office of Governor Jared Polis and engaging with the media to draw attention to the situation.
Challenges Faced by Truck Drivers
The highway closure was attributed to the impact of the snowstorm on truck drivers, some of whom had not complied with the requirement to use chains on their tires for better traction. Twelve truck drivers were cited for failure to use chains during the storm, reflecting the necessity for enforcement of safety regulations.
Wagner expressed a desire for more stringent penalties for truck drivers without chains and emphasized the importance of efficient vehicle clearance to prevent extensive traffic disruptions.
Lessons Learned and Resilience
Despite the ordeal, the women demonstrated remarkable resilience and camaraderie. Their ability to adapt, support one another, and maintain a sense of humor amidst adversity exemplified the strength of their collective spirit.
The unforeseen challenge served as a testament to the women's strength and solidarity, leaving a lasting impression on their journey with the Thera-ski Bus.
