Discovery of Shackleton's Shipwrecked Quest Renews Interest in Polar History
The discovery of Endurance in 2022 renewed interest in finding the Quest, the vessel on which Ernest Shackleton died in 1922.
In a remarkable turn of events, a recent discovery has reignited fascination with the legendary Antarctic explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton, and his ill-fated vessel, Endurance.
Discovery of the Quest's Wreckage
The year 2022 marked the momentous discovery of the wreckage of Shackleton's lesser-known vessel, the Quest, which was carrying him back to Antarctica at the time of his passing in 1922. The quest for the Quest, as it came to be known, had captivated the imagination of many. The vessel, which continued to sail for four decades after Shackleton's demise, eventually met its fate during a seal-hunting expedition off Canada's Atlantic coast in 1962.
A Breakthrough Moment
On June 9, 2022, John Geiger, leading an expedition dedicated to finding the Quest, experienced a breakthrough. As the research vessel floated off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, an unusual shape appeared on the sonar detection screen, signaling the long-awaited discovery.
"This is the last big Shackleton event," remarked Alexandra Shackleton, the explorer's granddaughter, in an exclusive interview. "There won’t be anything else as important as this."
