Early and Strong Allergy Season Sweeping Across Central U.S., Linked to Climate Change
Allergy season arrives early and stronger than usual, driven by climate change.
Spring allergy season has arrived sooner and stronger than expected, affecting various regions of the United States. The USA National Phenology Network reported that compared to the long-term average from 1991 to 2020, Denver is 6 days early, Chicago is 15 days early, and Detroit is 23 days early.
Climate Change Worsening Allergy Season
Researchers attribute the early and intensified allergy season to climate change. The past winter was the warmest on record across the continental U.S., leading to fewer days below freezing and enabling plants to bloom earlier and for longer periods. This has resulted in pollen seasons starting earlier and with increased pollen in the air, according to William Anderegg, an associate professor at the University of Utah.
21% Increase in Pollen
Between 1990 and 2018, there was a 21% increase in pollen levels, as indicated by a recent study authored by Anderegg.
Pollen Count for Spring 2024
Dr. Rachna Shah, director of the Loyola Medicine Allergy Count, observed that tree pollen in the Chicago area reached a "moderate" level in mid-February, much earlier than usual.
Most Challenging Cities for Allergy Sufferers
According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, the top five most challenging cities for allergies this year are Wichita, Kansas; Virginia Beach, Virginia; Greenville, South Carolina; Dallas; and Oklahoma City. This ranking is based on over-the-counter medicine use, pollen counts, and the availability of allergy specialists.
Understanding Pollen
Pollen is released by trees, grasses, and weeds, and can be carried from outdoors into homes. Dr. Neil Parikh, allergist and immunologist with Dignity Health Mercy Medical Group, advised taking precautions such as showering, changing clothes, and using saline water sinus rinses after being outside with high pollen exposure. Additionally, HEPA air purifiers can help remove pollen from the indoor environment.
Common Allergy Symptoms
Allergy symptoms to be aware of include nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, and coughing. Postnasal drip from allergies can cause a sore throat, and allergens can lead to sinus headaches due to swelling in the sinuses.
