Ennead + Dattner Design Kips Bay's Innovative SPARC Research Campus
Ennead + Dattner will design a 600,000ft² education building in Kips Bay, NYC, with sustainability and community focus.

The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) has ambitious plans for the future of education and research in Kips Bay with the Science Park and Research Campus (SPARC). This innovative project, led by the team of Ennead + Dattner, aims to transform a large swathe of land into a vibrant hub of learning and discovery.
A Vision for the Future of Education
The centerpiece of SPARC will be a state-of-the-art educational building spanning over 600,000 square feet. This facility will house three integrated CUNY schools: Hunter College School of Nursing, CUNY Graduate School of Health & Health Policy, and Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC). In addition, a new NYC Public Schools (NYCPS) health and science career-focused high school will be established within the campus.
The project goes beyond just constructing buildings. It envisions creating a vibrant public space where students, researchers, and the community can interact and collaborate. A new pedestrian bridge across the FDR Drive will provide access to the waterfront, further enhancing the connection between the campus and its surroundings.
Sustainable Design at the Core
SPARC is committed to incorporating sustainable design principles throughout its development. The project guidelines set a target of reducing embodied carbon by 50%, primarily through the implementation of circular practices. This involves minimizing waste generated during construction and deconstruction, reusing or recycling 95% of concrete and soil for high-value applications, and ensuring that 25% of all virgin materials used are low-carbon.
According to NYCEDC's Chief Strategy Officer Cecilia Kushner, the goal is not only to support New York City's green transition but also to leverage the economic influence of the NYCEDC to foster a larger market for circular construction among private actors across the city. By promoting sustainable practices, SPARC sets an example for future developments in New York and beyond.
A Hub for Innovation
The Science Park Development will not only provide state-of-the-art facilities for education and research but also foster a culture of innovation. The integration of different schools and disciplines will create opportunities for cross-pollination of ideas, leading to new discoveries and advancements. The public open space and pedestrian bridge will further enhance the sense of community and collaboration within the campus.
The team behind SPARC brings extensive experience working in NYC, expertise in resilience and sustainability, and a deep commitment to community engagement. Their goal is to design an innovative development that will shape the city's future by fostering education, research, and sustainable practices.
With its focus on innovative design, circular practices, and community engagement, SPARC has the potential to become a model for future developments in New York City and beyond. It represents a vision for a more sustainable, equitable, and innovative future for the city.
