New Fox Nation series delves into Idaho college murders, with a couple arrested in Daytona Beach after children disappear. Aiding escape charge for Idaho inmate accomplice.
New Developments in the Idaho College Murders Case
Charges and Arrests
A young couple from Georgia was arrested on Saturday afternoon in Daytona Beach, Florida. They were found drunk and asleep on the sand, while their children were missing. A fourth person, Tia J. Garcia, 27, of Twin Falls, has been charged with aiding and abetting escape for owning the car used in the escape of Skylar Meade, a white supremacist Idaho prison gang member.
Escape and Ambush
Garcia falsely reported the car stolen less than an hour after the escape, and it was revealed that she had been instructed to do so by the escapee's accomplice, Nicholas Umphenour. The escape occurred when Umphenour shot and wounded two corrections officers who were preparing to bring Meade back to prison early on March 20.
Tracking and Suspicions
Police tracked Meade and Umphenour down about 36 hours after their escape, suspecting them in the killings of two men while on the run. The pair has not yet been charged in the killings.
Arrest of Tia J. Garcia
Garcia is an acquaintance of Umphenour and Meade, and she picked up Umphenour from the airport when he arrived in Boise on March 17. She has a criminal record including six felonies and four misdemeanors and is being held on $1 million bail. She did not enter a plea during her initial court appearance.
Planning of the Escape
Authorities are still investigating how the ambush was planned and executed. Meade and Umphenour were both members of the Aryan Knights white supremacist prison gang and had mutual friends in and out of prison. Meade had recently been held in solitary confinement because officials deemed him a security risk.
Incident After the Ambush
While on the run, Meade and Umphenour apparently killed two men in northern Idaho. Investigators found shackles at one of the victim's cabins and located the other victim's minivan in a different area. A woman identified as Tonia Huber has been charged with harboring a fugitive, eluding police and drug possession.
Upcoming Hearings
Meade, Umphenour, and Garcia face preliminary hearings before Ada County Magistrate Judge Abraham Wingrove on April 8. Huber, who is charged in Twin Falls County, faces a preliminary hearing on April 5. Correction Director Josh Tewalt has promised to review its policies and practices in light of the escape.
