French Warship Intercepts Three Houthi Ballistic Missiles in Southern Red Sea

French warship intercepts Houthi ballistic missiles, showcasing ongoing engagement between Western navies and the Iran-backed rebels in the Red Sea.

A French warship intercepted at least three Houthi ballistic missiles on Thursday, marking the latest engagement between Western navies and the Iran-backed Houthis. The frigate, part of the European Union security mission Operation Aspides, destroyed three ballistic missiles during the incident.

Newly Released Footage

Newly released footage from a French frigate operating in the southern Red Sea shows the warship shooting down a Houthi ballistic missile on Thursday. In the video, sailors can be seen working on the bridge before a surface-to-air missile is fired from a launcher, intercepting a target in the air.

French Involvement

France is one of several countries working alongside the US Navy to protect international shipping lanes from the Houthis, who have been firing drones and missiles at vessels sailing off the coast of Yemen for months.

US Central Command

Gen. Michael Kurilla, commander of US Central Command, stated that French forces destroyed two Houthi anti-ship ballistic missiles earlier in the day. The Houthis started firing anti-ship ballistic missiles at the end of 2023, with recent incidents including the sinking of a vessel and a fatal attack.

Houthi Weapons

Besides anti-ship ballistic missiles, the Houthis have also launched anti-ship cruise missiles, one-way attack drones, and unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) packed with explosives. While they have not hit US or coalition warships yet, engagements between the two sides occur on a near-daily basis.

International Response

Alongside the French action, German and American forces each destroyed a Houthi drone boat on the same day. US forces conduct preemptive strikes in Yemen, while the EU's Operation Aspides reported that a French helicopter shot down a Houthi drone threatening commercial ships.
