Homeland Security Secretary criticizes Texas governor’s migrant transportation methods

Earlier today, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas criticized Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's approach to transporting migrants, labeling it as a "significant governance shortfall." Mayorkas expressed his disapproval of Abbott's decision to bus asylum seekers to various cities across the nation, accusing him of refusing to collaborate with other local and state officials. The ongoing situation has resulted in Democratic-led cities such as New York, New Jersey, and Chicago having to manage an unexpected influx of migrants. In response, New York City Mayor Eric Adams issued an executive order demanding prior notice and specific arrival times for migrant charter buses originating from Texas. Meanwhile, buses of migrants have reportedly utilized train stations in New Jersey to reach New York City, prompting further complications. Addressing the escalating immigration challenges, federal officials have been deployed to cities like Chicago, Denver, and New York to aid in management. Simultaneously, House Speaker Mike Johnson and 60 Republican colleagues are traveling to Eagle Pass, Texas, to visit the border and advocate for legislative action to address the increasing migrant arrivals. It was also reported that the House Homeland Security Committee is slated to commence impeachment proceedings against Mayorkas. In response, Mayorkas expressed willingness to cooperate with the impeachment hearings while continuing his work responsibilities.
