Illegal Immigrant Charged with Five Counts of First-Degree Murder Outside Chicago
Migrant surge impact: Border agents seize 17 firearms, $50,000 cash in recent weeks at Arizona port. AK-style rifle found taped to migrant's chest.
Intensified efforts by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the Port of Nogales in Arizona have resulted in the seizure of more than a dozen weapons, further thwarting attempts to support criminal organizations in Mexico.
Between February 19 and March 29, CBP agents seized a total of 17 firearms, which included 13 AK-style rifles and four pistols. Notably, one of the rifles was found strapped to the bare chest of a migrant, concealed with black tape and tucked into the person's jeans.
In addition to the firearms, CBP agents also seized approximately $50,000 in cash, further disrupting illicit activities that rely on financial resources to function effectively.
Concealment Methods
The seizures also shed light on the innovative methods employed by criminal elements to transport illegal weapons and money. Firearms were found hidden in various ways, including in an undercarriage and in cookware, indicating the extent to which individuals are willing to go to facilitate criminal activities.
Port Director's Statement
Port Director Michael W. Humphries highlighted the various concealment methods used and emphasized the importance of CBP's diligence in uncovering such illegal activities.
These seizures pose a significant blow to transnational criminal organizations that rely on the trafficking of weapons and funds to sustain their operations. By intercepting these illicit items, CBP has successfully disrupted these organizations' capabilities and contributed to enhancing security in the region.
