Kamala Harris Campaign Scrambles to Clarify Tim Walz's Controversial Combat Remarks
Kamala Harris's campaign addresses Tim Walz's 2018 remarks suggesting combat service to clarify his views on responsible gun ownership.
Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign team is currently addressing comments made in 2018 by Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, which implied that he had served in combat. These remarks have recently resurfaced as part of the campaign's emphasis on Mr. Walz's stance on responsible gun ownership.
Unintentional Reference to 2018 Remarks
During a political event in 2018, Mr. Walz, then a representative in the House, spoke about his 24 years in the Army National Guard and his experience as a hunter while discussing gun control. He mentioned supporting common-sense gun legislation that respects Second Amendment rights, including background checks and restrictions on high-powered firearms. In this context, he stated, "We can make sure that those weapons of war that I carried in war is the only place where those weapons are at."
However, it was recently brought to light that Mr. Walz's comments, shared on social media shortly after Ms. Harris announced him as her running mate, inadvertently created the impression that he had served in combat.
Deployment and Clarification
While it is true that Mr. Walz deployed after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, it is essential to clarify that his deployment did not occur in a combat zone. This detail is crucial in understanding the context of his previous remarks and the perception they have generated.
