Marine Ecologist Discusses Rarity of Shark Attacks Following Florida and North Carolina Incidents

Marine ecologist discusses rare shark attacks in Florida and North Carolina. Recovery expected for teen bitten in North Topsail Beach.

A 14-year-old boy, Blayne Brown, is recovering from injuries sustained in a shark attack that took place at North Topsail Beach in North Carolina on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. near Beach Access No. 4 in Onslow County.

Witness Chasity Keeter recounted the terrifying experience, stating, "We heard a lot of commotion and everybody yelling, 'Get out of the water! Shark, shark!' It was really scary."

Brown, who was visiting from West Virginia, expressed his shock, saying, "I was in the water, like screaming for help. People just looked at me, and thought I was just screaming to be screaming. Like, I didn’t even know there was a shark that bit me. It just scared me so bad."

Police and EMS Response

Fortunately, two police officers and an EMS officer were already present on the scene from a previous unrelated distress call. They promptly provided assistance to Brown by applying a tourniquet and stopping the bleeding before transporting him to the nearby Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune for treatment.

"Bystanders had pulled him out, and they were wrapping a towel around him and stopping the bleeding, which is the right thing to do," said North Topsail Beach Police Chief William Younginer. "That's exactly what they should have done."

Younginer emphasized the rarity of shark attacks in the area, stating, "We have some people that step on a stingray, things like that, but we haven't had [a shark attack]. I've been here since 2018. We haven't had a shark bite." Younginer shared that Brown is expected to be released from the hospital soon, indicating a positive outlook for the teenager's recovery.
