Mars Express Orbiter Captures Images of Spiders-Like Phenomenon on Martian Surface

ESA's Mars orbiter captured images of "spiders" on the planet's surface, caused by carbon dioxide ice bursting through the ground.

The European Space Agency (ESA) has reported a fascinating discovery on Mars, with its Mars Express orbiter capturing images of what appears to be an unusual phenomenon known as "spiders." These formations, resembling small, dark-colored features, are formed when sunlight interacts with carbon dioxide deposits during the planet's winter months.

As sunshine hits the carbon dioxide ice at the bottom of these deposits, it undergoes a transformation into gas. Subsequently, the gas builds pressure, ultimately bursting through the ice, which can be up to three feet thick. This results in geyser-like eruptions, with dust settling on the planet's surface to create the distinctive "spider" patterns.

Size and Location

Despite appearing minuscule from a distance, the "spider" patterns are actually quite large. The ESA reports that these patches can be as wide as 145 feet, and at their largest, might extend over a half-mile. These arachnid-like formations are etched beneath the carbon dioxide ice, offering a unique spectacle on Mars.

Observations by the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter

The ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, launched in 2016, has been instrumental in studying these intriguing patterns on Mars. Situated near the planet's south polar cap, the "spiders" are particularly prevalent in an area nicknamed "Inca City." This region exhibits a linear, almost geometric network of ridges, reminiscent of Incan ruins, and was discovered by a NASA probe in 1972.

While the exact origins of this unique landscape remain unclear, NASA has noted that Mars is currently experiencing spring-like conditions. The agency's Curiosity Rover has been actively studying the environment, particularly in the Gale Crater, and enjoying the warmer weather on the planet.

The discovery of these "spiders" adds another layer of intrigue to the ongoing exploration of Mars, offering researchers valuable insights into the planet's geological and atmospheric processes, while fueling further curiosity about the mysteries that lie beyond our world.
