Massive Wildfire Rages in Northern Texas, Prompting Evacuations and Road Closures
Massive Wildfire Rages in Northern Texas
A massive wildfire has torn through over 250,000 acres in northern Texas due to dry and unusually warm weather. The Smokehouse Creek Fire, now the largest among several wildfires in the region, started on Monday, February 26. This fire has quickly become the fifth-largest wildfire in Texas history, surpassing the total area burned by all fires in the state last year.
Evacuations and Closures
The devastation has led to widespread evacuations and road closures, affecting communities in Moore and Potter counties, as well as parts of Roberts County near the Oklahoma border. The area is currently engulfed in thick smoke, prompting authorities to issue evacuation orders for the safety of residents.
Challenges in Firefighting
The firefighting efforts are facing additional challenges as a forecasted cold front is expected to worsen the already dry conditions. Red-flag conditions, indicating extreme fire behavior, have exacerbated the situation, making it difficult for firefighters to contain the blaze.
