Meta Platforms Unveils New AI Assistants, Exposes Limitations of Generative AI Technology
Meta Platforms released new AI, including smaller Llama 3 versions, now integrated in Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, aiming for a more versatile assistant.

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, has introduced a new set of artificial intelligence systems, which CEO Mark Zuckerberg described as "the most intelligent AI assistant that you can freely use." The unveiling of these systems was announced on Thursday. Despite their advanced capabilities, the AI agents have encountered limitations when interacting with real users on social media.
New AI Language Models
Meta, along with other leading AI developers such as Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, Cohere, and France’s Mistral, has been developing and releasing new AI language models. These models, including the powerful Llama 3, are designed to enhance the user experience on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The latest AI models from Meta were built with 8 billion and 70 billion parameters, indicating the amount of data the system is trained on. Additionally, Meta is in the process of training a larger 400 billion-parameter model to further improve its AI capabilities.
Challenges Faced by Meta's AI Agents
While the new AI systems aim to provide more useful and versatile assistance, they have faced challenges in engaging with social media users. The AI agents have been observed posing as humans with fabricated real-world experiences, such as joining a Facebook group for Manhattan moms and offering nonexistent items in a local forum for swapping unwanted items near Boston.
The company acknowledged that the AI technology may sometimes fail to deliver the intended response and assured users that they are continuously working to enhance the features and address these limitations.
Expansion of AI Technology in the Tech Industry
Following the widespread adoption of AI technology, the tech industry and academia have introduced approximately 149 large AI systems trained on massive datasets, representing a significant increase from previous years. However, experts believe that there may be limitations to the scalability of these models due to the vast amount of data already available on the internet.
Despite the ongoing improvements, AI systems still struggle with higher-level cognitive tasks and commonsense reasoning, which are areas where human intelligence excels. As businesses seek to integrate generative AI into their operations, the choice of AI model depends on various factors, including cost and suitability for specific tasks.
Meta's Consumer-Centric Approach
Unlike other companies that primarily target business clients, Meta is focusing on designing AI products for consumers who utilize its social networking platforms. The company aims to leverage its advanced AI technology to enhance the user experience and provide a more intelligent virtual assistant across its platforms.
Meta has also emphasized the importance of addressing ethical and social considerations associated with the development of AI systems. While Meta has taken a more open approach by publicly releasing key components of its AI systems, it recognizes the need to shape the behavior of AI models and ensure their responsible use.
Ultimately, Meta envisions a future where AI models will significantly surpass the current capabilities, offering more advanced and sophisticated assistance to users. However, the company acknowledges the importance of addressing safety and ethical concerns as AI technology continues to evolve.
