Michigan Group of Jewish and Palestinian Women Spread Message of Unity and Understanding

In Michigan, a group of six Jewish and six Palestinian women has been meeting twice a month for over two years. They call themselves "Zeitouna," which translates to "olive tree" in Arabic. Their motto, "refusing to be enemies," reflects their commitment to understanding and unity. The group provides a safe space for these women to support each other in the face of conflict and tension.

Throughout their meetings, the Zeitouna members have found solace in each other's experiences. Wadad Abed expressed the importance of having a space where everyone is welcomed with open arms, emphasizing the mutual support they offer one another. Diane Blumson highlighted the group's humanitarian approach, recognizing the trauma experienced by others, and the loss of this ability in society.

Spreading a Message of Unity

Zeitouna's impact extends beyond their gatherings as they work to promote understanding on college campuses. Amid the polarization that followed the events of Oct. 7, the Arab-Jewish Alliance was formed at the University of Michigan. This alliance, founded by both Palestinian and Jewish students, aims to bridge the gap between their respective cultures.

Evan Rotker, a co-founder, shared his motivation for creating the alliance, expressing the need to bring Arab and Jewish students together. Furthermore, students like Welly Altaii joined the group to combat the dehumanizing rhetoric observed online, seeking genuine interaction across cultural lines. These efforts demonstrate a commitment to fostering lasting friendships and understanding between different communities.
