Mount Etna Overwhelmed: Tourists Congest Slopes Amid Eruptions

Overcrowding at Mount Etna due to recent eruptions is causing safety concerns and obstructing rescue efforts.

Thousands of tourists have flocked to Sicily’s Mount Etna in recent weeks to witness its latest eruption, causing congestion on roads and hindering rescue efforts despite authorities' attempts to keep visitors safe from the explosive lava flows. While Mount Etna is known for its frequent eruptions and has long attracted tourists, the current eruption, which began on February 8th, has drawn a surge of photographers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts.

Safety Concerns Amidst Tourist Rush

Salvo Cocina, Sicily’s regional civil protection leader, expressed concern over the influx of visitors in a statement on Sunday. He described a “constant flow” of approximately 1,000 people daily, along with “wild parking on the edges of tight streets,” which creates an obstacle for emergency vehicles. Cocina emphasized the heightened risk of falling and sinking into the snow as darkness sets in, particularly with the increased number of people on the slopes.

Local Officials Issue Warnings

The overwhelming tourist presence has prompted local Italian officials to issue warnings and orders to ensure public safety. They are urging visitors to exercise caution, adhere to designated paths, and avoid parking haphazardly to prevent further congestion and ensure the accessibility of emergency services in case of any incidents.
