Mountain goat survives harrowing rescue attempt under Kansas City bridge

On a fateful Monday afternoon April 8th, a mountain goat found itself in a perilous situation under a bridge at E. 63rd Street and Lewis Road near Swope Park in Kansas City. The Kansas City Fire Department responded to a distress call about the stranded goat and swiftly took action to save the animal.

Upon arrival, first responders secured the area and commenced the challenging rescue operation. The goat was spotted hopping around the support pillars under the bridge. Amidst the chaos, Tori Fugate, Chief Communications Officer with the KC Pet Project, arrived at the scene around 5 p.m. A bystander, previously an animal control officer, attempted to assist by tying a rope around the goat's neck in a misguided effort to guide it to safety. Unfortunately, this led to a precarious situation as the goat ended up suspended in mid-air, posing a significant risk to its well-being.

A Miraculous Recovery

Despite the dire circumstances, the rescue team persevered and eventually managed to cut the rope and lower the goat to safety. Subsequently, a veterinarian sedated the mountain goat and transported it to the KC Pet Project for urgent care. The veterinary assessment revealed that the goat, which had recently been adopted and had escaped from its new home, miraculously sustained no broken bones, as confirmed by X-ray results.

Provided with the necessary fluids and a comfortable resting environment, the resilient mountain goat is currently under careful observation. While the creature is not yet out of the woods, the dedicated team attending to its recovery remains cautiously optimistic about its prospects for a full recovery.
