Northern New Mexico Animal Shelter Steps in to Save Puppies Dumped in Trash Bag

Española shelter rescues abandoned puppies in a trash bag, finding them covered in ticks and dehydrated, but now they're recovering.

In Northern New Mexico, the Española Humane animal shelter has intervened to assist in a distressing situation. Over the weekend, a shocking discovery was made when a passerby found a garbage bag containing several puppies discarded on the side of the road near North Prince Drive, approximately three miles north of Española.

Out of the eight puppies that were callously abandoned, only two have survived. Treasure and Oro, both eight weeks old, are the fortunate survivors, while the rest of the litter tragically did not make it, according to Mattie Allen, the Director of Communications at Española Humane.

Upon their arrival at the shelter, the shepherd and rottweiler mix puppies were found to be in a pitiful state. They were discovered completely infested with ticks, affecting every part of their bodies, from their noses to their tails, as well as inside their ears and between their toes.

Recovery and Hope for Adoption

Although the exact duration the puppies spent in the bag remains unknown, they were found dehydrated and lethargic. Despite being only eight weeks old, they are heavily reliant on the shelter for care, love, and sustenance. After a few days of dedicated care, the puppies are showing signs of improvement and are expected to be available for adoption in the near future.

Expressing her dismay at the situation, Allen emphasized the importance of seeking help when facing challenges in caring for animals. She urged individuals in similar situations to reach out for assistance instead of resorting to such heartless actions, reiterating the shelter's commitment to providing a safe haven for unwanted and vulnerable animals.

As the Española Humane continues to care for Treasure and Oro, they encourage those interested in learning more about their efforts to visit their website. Additionally, the shelter hopes that the community becomes aware of their dedication to aiding animals in need, reaffirming their readiness to assist those requiring support in caring for their pets.
