Guérande, mentioned in ancient records as early as the ninth century, boasts a rich historical legacy. The discovery of the cache has provided insight into the medieval occupation of the site between the 12th and 13th centuries. Moreover, the town's construction of a wall during the 13th to 15th centuries indicates a significant historical backdrop.

Archaeological revelation

The cache of coins, concealed in an oak box, dates back to between 1180 and 1204, outlining its medieval origins. In addition to this discovery, three other deposits were found in the ruins of a 14th-century masonry building, with coins dating between 1341 and 1342. The variety in preservation of the coins and their vessels has provided archaeologists with a unique insight into medieval practices.

Intriguing artifacts

The best-preserved collection of coins was found in a pitcher with a broken neck that had been repurposed as a container, sealed with an upside-down pot. Researchers used advanced 3D imaging to peer inside the pitcher without damaging the artifact, identifying four linen fabric envelopes holding coins within. Moreover, the other two deposits, though less preserved, were sealed in ceramic containers and contained traces of textile fragments alongside the coins.

Ongoing exploration

The discovery has yielded more than 2,000 coins from the various deposits, captivating archaeologists who are set to continue their examination of the coins and textiles.
