Republican Governor Greg Abbott has issued a disaster declaration for 60 counties, as the largest fire has rapidly grown, consuming nearly 400 square miles of land. This is more than twice its initial size since the fire sparked on Monday. The main blaze, known as the Smokehouse Creek Fire, has closed highways and remained at zero percent containment as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service.

The wildfires have also taken a toll on the main facility responsible for assembling and disassembling America’s nuclear arsenal. The Pantex facility, located 30 miles east of Amarillo, halted its operations on Tuesday night as fires raged out of control in its vicinity. As a result, response efforts have shifted to evacuations, with a small number of non-essential personnel sheltered on-site.

Evacuation Orders

The spread of multiple fires across Hemphill and Hutchinson counties near the Oklahoma border has led to evacuation orders in various areas. Towns like Canadian, Miami, Skellytown, Wheeler, Allison, and Briscoe have all been affected by these orders. Residents in these areas are urged to comply with the evacuation orders for their safety.
