Thailand Urges Myanmar Military to Exercise Restraint Amid Loss of Border Town

Thailand's foreign minister urged Myanmar's military to show restraint after losing control of a trading town to guerrillas.

Thailand's foreign minister made a plea to Myanmar's military authorities to refrain from responding violently after losing a crucial border trading town to its adversaries. Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara expressed this during a visit to Mae Sot, situated across a river from Myanmar's Myawaddy. The army troops abandoned their last defensive position, which resulted in the trading town falling under the control of the ethnic Karen National Union and its allies, including members of the pro-democracy People's Defense Forces.

Military's Unprecedented Defeats

Myanmar's armed forces have encountered a series of unprecedented defeats since last October, losing significant territory, including border posts. The civilians took up arms after the military seized power in 2021 from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.

Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun, spokesman for Myanmar's military government, stated that the soldiers abandoned their post for the safety of their families living with them. There are concerns that the Myanmar military might launch a counter-attack against Myawaddy, potentially leading to an influx of refugees into Thailand and disrupting border trade.

Thailand's Efforts for Peace

Thai Foreign Minister Parnpree emphasized that Thailand does not wish to see any violence and has already communicated this to Myanmar's military. Thailand offered its assistance and expressed readiness to mediate if required. The minister also hoped for talks between the opposing sides to prevent retaliatory attacks.

Escalating Tensions

Despite the assurance of no violent retaliation, there were reports of loud explosions in the area on the Myanmar side, causing unease among residents. Thai troops remained vigilant near the bridges connecting Myawaddy and Mae Sot, aiming to ensure the safety of residents and prevent Myanmar soldiers from entering Thailand.

Concerns and Efforts for Stability

Amid the escalating tensions, the Karen National Union expressed deep concern for the security of people living on both sides of the border. They sought stability, access to humanitarian aid, and cooperation with the Thai government and international organizations.

The Karen, who have been fighting for greater autonomy for over seven decades, are striving to establish mechanisms for stability, law enforcement, and trade facilitation in the Myawaddy area.
