Trial Begins in Thailand for Son of Spanish Actors Accused of Killing Colombian Surgeon

Trial begins in Thailand for son of Spanish actors accused of killing and dismembering Colombian surgeon on Koh Pha Ngan.

The trial of Daniel Sancho Bronchalo, son of Spanish actors, began on Tuesday in Thailand. He was accused of killing and dismembering Colombian surgeon Edwin Arrieta Arteaga on the popular tourist island of Koh Pha Ngan. The remains of Arrieta were found stuffed in plastic bags at a landfill on the island, which is known for its rave-style “full moon parties.”

Faith in Thai Prosecutors

Lawyer Juan Gonzalo Ospina Serrano, representing Arrieta’s family, expressed their trust in Thai prosecutors to deliver justice. He stated, “They are grateful and hope that Thai law is forceful and that the truth can be told.”

Charges and Pleas

Sancho faces charges including premeditated murder, concealment of a body, and destruction of other people’s documents. The latter is related to the alleged damaging of Arrieta’s passport. Sancho pleaded not guilty to premeditated murder and destruction of documents but admitted guilt to hiding the victim’s body. The charge of premeditated murder carries a possible death penalty, while damaging other’s documents carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a 100,000 baht ($2,750) fine. The concealment or damaging of a body carries a year in prison and a 20,000 baht ($550) fine.

Witnesses’ Statements

The trial opened with statements from witnesses brought in by the plaintiff, stated Apichart Srinual, a Thai lawyer representing Sancho. When asked about his confidence in the defense case, Apichart said, “It depends on the evidence,” and added, “there are a lot of witnesses. It depends on what they will say.”

Sancho’s Arrest and Confession

Sancho, a chef, was arrested in August after the remains of Arrieta, 44, were discovered at the landfill. Police revealed that Sancho had reported a missing person and was subsequently detained. He later confessed to killing and dismembering Arrieta and dumping the body parts in the landfill and the sea, although he denied that his action was premeditated.
