U.S. to Transfer Confiscated Russian Funds to Estonia for Support of Ukraine

The nearly $500,000 sum was obtained from an illegal procurement network. This marks the first direct transfer of funds to a foreign ally to aid Ukraine, bypassing stalled foreign aid in Congress.

Utilization of Funds

The funds will be used in Estonia as direct transfer to Ukraine is not currently feasible. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco stated that the funds will support a project to streamline damage assessments of Ukraine’s electrical transmission and distribution systems. She emphasized that the Department of Justice will continue to explore innovative approaches to aid Ukraine, independent of congressional approval.
