UC San Diego Launches Wildfire Commons to Accelerate Solutions
A new platform called the Wildfire Commons connects experts and resources to accelerate wildfire solutions through open data, AI, and collaboration.

In an era defined by increasingly frequent and intense megafires, the need for innovative solutions to mitigate the devastating impacts of wildfires has never been more urgent. Recognizing this pressing challenge, a team of researchers from the University of California San Diego (UCSD) has unveiled the Wildfire Commons, a groundbreaking platform designed to accelerate the development and deployment of cutting-edge wildfire technologies. This ambitious initiative aims to unite experts from diverse fields, foster collaboration, and leverage open data, advanced science, and artificial intelligence (AI) to address the multifaceted complexities of wildland fire challenges.
A Collaborative Ecosystem for Wildfire Innovation
The Wildfire Commons, an initiative of the Proactive Wildfire & Environmental Sustainability Solutions (ProWESS) Center, is a collaborative effort between UCSD's Societal Computing and Innovation Lab (SCIL) and Los Alamos National Laboratory. This unique platform comprises three interconnected components: the Community Marketplace, the Expert Network Tool, and the FireForge Platform. Each component plays a crucial role in creating a vibrant ecosystem that fosters innovation, knowledge sharing, and the rapid translation of research into practical solutions.
The Community Marketplace serves as a central hub for discovering a wide range of resources, including datasets, models, and services related to wildfire science and technology. These resources are meticulously organized with robust tagging and standardized vocabularies, ensuring easy discoverability. Additionally, the marketplace provides guidance on usage requirements, recognition criteria, and best practices for technical, legal, and data agreements, facilitating a smooth transition from research workflows to real-world applications.
Accelerating Wildfire Solutions Through Community Engagement
The Expert Network Tool empowers members to actively participate in the Wildfire Commons community by sharing their areas of expertise, connecting with like-minded individuals, and discovering new opportunities for innovation. This network fosters a sense of shared purpose and enables the cross-pollination of ideas between researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and industry experts.
At the heart of the platform lies the FireForge Platform, a collaborative workspace that provides users with access to a data and model discovery interface coupled to a cloud-based sandbox for designing workflows and prototyping new technologies and solutions. FireForge facilitates seamless collaboration through shared Collaboration Studios, enabling users to explore data, models, and tools in an integrated environment. By leveraging SCIL's National Data Platform, FireForge addresses the challenges of data accessibility and computational resources, empowering developers to bring their wildfire innovation ideas to life.
Driving Real-World Impact
The Wildfire Commons is already making a tangible impact through its active partnerships and events. Recent webinars with organizations such as the Western Fire and Forest Resilience Collaborative, Milliman, and the Earth Fire Alliance have facilitated the exchange of knowledge, best practices, and innovative approaches to wildfire management. These collaborations highlight the platform's ability to bridge the gap between research and practice, fostering a collective effort to mitigate the risks associated with wildfires.
