A Swiss Airlines flight, en route from Newark Liberty International Airport to Zurich, Switzerland, was compelled to return to the airport after an unruly passenger attempted to breach the cockpit. The incident occurred around 9:50 p.m., prompting the Airbus A330, which was carrying 236 passengers and 13 crew members, to make an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport at approximately 11 p.m.
Altercation and Consequences
According to Swiss Airlines, the unnamed passenger exhibited abusive behavior towards the crew, and one member of the cabin crew sustained minor injuries during the altercation. The pilot reported to air traffic controllers that the passenger's behavior was escalating, and there were concerns that the individual might become aggressive towards others on board. Additionally, the passenger attempted to enter the cockpit and freely moved about the cabin, prompting the decision to return to the airport.
Legal Action and Investigation
Upon landing, New Jersey Port Authority police took the individual into custody and charged them with interference with transportation and assault. Subsequently, the passenger was released with a court desk appearance. Meanwhile, the FAA has initiated an investigation into the incident.
All 236 passengers were rebooked on alternative flights, and the crew, including the injured member, also returned to Switzerland.
